Hungerholt sets new school record with 61 points in Cardinals’ victory

LYLE – LeRoy-Ostrander senior Camden Hungerholt added one more record to his long list of accomplishments as a Cardinal as he set a new program single-game scoring record in a 112-101 win over Lyle-Pacelli Friday.

Hungerholt, who is already LO’s all-time leading scorer, poured in a career-high and program record 60 points in the win as he caught fire from the inside and mid-range, while also getting plenty of inside looks for the Cardinals (13-13 overall).

“We were working as a team and playing together. We just had to finish this one,” Hungerholt said. “I was just out there playing and I didn’t really notice how many points that I had. I was just playing basketball and conditioning made a difference.”

The game saw five players score at least 20 points and a total of 19 three-pointers were made between the two teams.

LO’s offense also received a boost from Ryder Stern, who turned a lot of defensive rebounds into transition opportunities with quick reads and deep throws down the court. He finished with 10 points, 17 rebounds, and five assists. 

“It’s always been fun playing with Cam, he’s a great teammate and he does whatever we need him to. It’s crazy,” Stern said. “Tonight was fun, but it sucks giving up 100 points. We’ve got to play way better on defense. We were just poor on the defensive end and we weren’t doing our job.”

The Cardinals trailed by four at halftime, but they took the lead for good when Reid Hungerholt hit a three-pointer to make it 54-52 early in the second half. 

LP (3-23 overall) was able to hang around for the rest of the night as senior Landon Meyer put up 25 points, six rebounds, and four assists before fouling out and freshman Alex Lagunas poured in 30 points off the bench as he hit five threes.

LO scored the first nine points of the game, but LP was able to rally back and seize a 32-30 lead after Leland Hicks drilled a three-pointer with 5:28 left in the first half. LP ended up taking a 52-48 lead into the break.

The game served as a bit of a reunion as LP and LO combined football programs this year and the Cardinals went all the way to the state nine-man semifinals.

“We played football with those guys and we went far, it was weird competing against them,” Stern said.
