Barbara A. Wannarka, 92
Delmar Eugene Johnson, Sr., age 93, of Austin, passed away on Sunday, February 16, 2025 at Mayo Clinic Health System – Austin, Minnesota.
Known as Del or Shorty by friends and colleagues, Delmar was affectionately called Kingpin by his children.
Delmar’s journey began on August 5, 1931 near Rock Dell, Minnesota, born to Clifford and Mable (Jensen) Johnson.
In 1956, he crossed paths with Mercedes (Wilson) Holland, and their union led to nearly 50 years of companionship. Merc, as she was fondly known, brought four children from a previous marriage into their blended family, and together they welcomed three more children of their own.
A dedicated truck driver, Delmar spent most of his career behind the wheel, first with McDonough Freight and later with Murphy Motor Freight. His warm personality endeared him to many in the community, earning him the title of Minnesota Driver of the Month in August 1981. In addition to his trucking endeavors, Delmar also dabbled in hog farming and cattle feeding. Following the closure of Murphy Motor, he found fulfillment in a shipping and receiving role at Robinson Business Forms.
Delmar and Merc settled into their home in 1978, where Delmar became known as the neighborhood handyman. He generously offered his assistance and tools to anyone in need, while also tending to a vibrant garden that drew admiration from passersby. His talent for baking homemade bread further showcased his generosity, as he frequently shared his creations with neighbors and loved ones.
An avid outdoorsman, Delmar cherished his time spent riding his Arabian horse, D.J. Marquis, and tending to his daughter’s rural property. Wildlife frequented his yard, with ducks and squirrels becoming regular visitors. On pleasant days, he could be found on his porch swing, contentedly observing the world around him.
Despite facing health challenges in his later years, Delmar remained active with the support of his children. Family held a special place in his heart, with holidays always bringing loved ones together in his home.
Delmar was preceded in death by his parents, wife, brother, sister, stepson, and son-in-law. He is survived by his daughters, son, stepchildren, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
A celebration of Delmar’s life will be held at a later date. Cards and memorials can be sent to Delmar Johnson, Jr. at 510 2nd Avenue SW, Austin, MN 55912. Arrangements are being handled by Clasen-Jordan Mortuary.
